Vintage Summer

July 29, 2011

It is the end of July and I am so ready for summer to be over. It has been so hot in NY this summer and I really can’t wait for fall. Finding something to wear in this heat is pretty difficult. Wanting to look stylish is less of a concern for me now because all i care about is staying cool. However, if the heat was not a major concern for me, I would love to adorn myself in these vintage lovelies from 1st Dibs.

have a great weekend

Fuck Yeah! 1920′s!

July 28, 2011

I found this great new blog that publishes photos and art work from the 1920′s called Fuck Yeah! 1920′s!. There are so many decades of fashion history that I love. The 1940′s and 1950′s for their glamour, the 60′s especially since I love everything Mad Men. I would say my favorite decade style wise though will always be the 1920′s. It was so revolutionary for the time, I love the short hair, head dresses, flappers, the jewelry, and the dresses adorned in sequins and crystals. This blog is such a fun treat to take a trip back into the past. I chose my favorites below

What is your favorite fashion decade?

Hello All,
Lauren and I explored the many fields of Brimfield antique and collectibles show this past week. It was our first time and we had no idea what to expect. We were warned, “it’s SO much fun, but you’re not going find any good deals.” Thursday was absolutely perfect, 80 degrees, no humidity, no traffic and plenty of deals. We saw some beautiful jewelry, some silly signs, some creepy collectibles and even some tornado destruction:

Hi All,

Today we are finally launching our vintage section on Corvus Noir. It comes as no big surprise that we have decided to open a vintage shop on our website. You know me, I just love and prefer everything vintage. I have alot of fun reworking vintage jewelry and turning it into more modern pieces yet some items are just perfect the way they are. Our vintage shop will not contain any clothing. We are keeping it small and curated and only planning on selling vintage accessories. Lots of jewelry, purses, and sunglasses, some designer labels and some not. Craig and I are on our way to Brimfield this morning to scout out amazing vintage accessories to feature in the shop. I already have a few really great snake bangles to add and much more so stay tuned. For now we have some great designer vintage from vintage dealer Lori’s Loose Ends. She sells at Artists and Fleas on the weekend with Grayson and gave us some really special pieces. Chanel, Dior, and Karl Lagerfeld to name a few. Visit the vintage shop to see more and remember lots more will be listed soon. If you are a vintage dealer or know of any who would be interested in selling on the Corvus Noir Vintage shop send us an email with some photos and details.

July 6, 2011

It has been a long while since I have bought a pair of vintage sunnies. Truth be told I can not even remember my last purchase but it must have been like three years ago. I have bought both modern designer and cheapies within the last few years but not vintage. And vintage has always been and will always be my favorite. I feel much more glamorous when I rock a pair of vintage sunglasses almost like I am being transported back in time into a chicer version of myself. The Girls In The Attick

June 28, 2011

Happy Tuesday,

On Sunday I visited my friends Grayson and Lori at Artists and Fleas Market. They opened up their own vintage shop together in the market, ” The Girls in the Attic” and are the only upstairs vendor. Their shop is set up like a beautiful vintage boutique. To me it looks like a great bedroom decorated with tons of vintage all over the walls. Lots of dresses, robes, jewelry, purses, shoes. Once you step inside you feel like you are being transported back in time to the 20′s. I have a great collaboration coming up with these women soon so stay tuned for that. Can’t say much on the subject now but it is a part of our new venture for Corvus Noir, hint hint. Below are pics I took of their shop, be sure to check them out every Saturday and Sunday at the market. They are constantly bringing in new vintage inventory.

Vintage Hats

June 10, 2011

Happy Friday,

This post is dedicated to my dear friend Amanda who is a lover of hats. She has an amazing collection of modern and vintage hats that I will have to do a post on in the future. I am usually not to0 confident when it comes to wearing hats mostly because they don’t fit my big head. But I would love to wear vintage ones especially. In the 40′s and 50′s a woman would not be caught dead during the day without wearing a hat with matching coat and gloves. A simple trip to the grocery store required such garb and women were dressed to the nines. I think it is great that they always put such an effort into what they were wearing. My friend Amanda definitely has that inner confidence and elegance that these women from the past had and let me tell you she looks amazing in her hats! She makes me feel inspired to start trying vintage ones on when I stumble upon them. And let me tell you with the heat wave coming this summer hats will be a savior. I especially like to wear the straw fedora hats that I steal from Craig. They are perfect for those bad hair day’s and I have a whole lot of those in the summer time. I did a little browsing on 1st Dibs at their selection of vintage hats and chose ones I knew Amanda would love, myself included.

this is amazing, silk turban from the 1930′s

40′s hat with side feather, so cute

Gucci leather hat from the late 1970′s

1950′s fedora, love the over sized bow

love the feathers and veil on this 1940′s hat

60′s Dior

love the print on this Hermes hat

this is just too pretty, 1950′s

beaded cherry hat from the 40′s, amazing

crazy, love the color combo from the 1940′s

50′s Eastern style hat

love the wide brim and feathers

the colors on this head band are amazing, would look great on brunette or red hair

80′s cocktail hat, so dynasty

YSL beret from the 60′s

so 70′s cool, Gucci

60′s Jaguar

Dior 50′s hat, just gorge

Amanda, hope I picked out hats that you fancy, which are your favorites?

Have a great weekend

I love to collect and read coffee table books about vintage and antique jewelry and clothing. It is so enjoyable to just sit and relax with one of those books and feel like I am going back in time to a period where quality was key. Vintage department store catalogues is another great way to learn about the history of fashion and jewelry. Just by looking at the advertisements you learn so much about trends and styles, prices, and what was popular back then. People loved going to department stores such as Sears because they could buy everything they needed for themselves and their households all under one roof. Things ranging from kitchen appliances to jewelry, to clothing, to furniture, you name it they had it. Shopping from these cataloguers made it even easier. You didn’t even need to leave the house to do your shopping. I have yet to come across one of these vintage catalogues in person, they are truly a gold mine. I would love to frame all of the old jewelry and watch adverts and hang them on the wall next to my desk. Lucky for me and all of you I came across a great site, Wishbookweb.com that took the time to purchase and scan a bunch of vintage catalogues so that everyone can enjoy a little history. I am having so much fun going through these scans to gain a little inspiration from it, especially the jewelry ones.I love to inspect the prices and try and compare them to comparable items from today. It’s crazy that a gold and diamond ring can be under 10 bucks in the 30′s. I also like to study the pieces to admire the details that went into these jewelry items. In terms of the watch designers I actually have some vintage ones in the Corvus Noir archives that I still need to re design. Each watch ad that I come across I inspect to see if I have one similar in my own collection.

1933 Spiegel Christmas Catalogue

i love to collect cameo’s, the cameo ring is amazing, especially the price

would love to remove the straps and turn the watches into pendants

1940′s Sears Christmas Catalogue

1942 Sears Christmas Book

if any of you have any scans from vintage catalogues I would love to see them. Please email them to me

Vintage Closet

May 17, 2011

It looks like we will be having rain all week long in NYC which is a real bummer. It feels like its been raining all the time since April and let me tell you this does not feel like spring to me at all. Sometimes though a rainy week can be a blessing in disguise. It can force you to work on all those household projects you have been putting on the back burner. For me those include

1. going through my huge stack of magazines that are collecting dust to work on my inspiration tear outs

2. cleaning those hard to reach places in the apartment, or shall I say the spots i lazily neglect

3. working on a photo shoot for the Petit Corvus section of the website

4. Re organizxing my closet

Whenever I straighten out my closet and let me tell you it is a bit of a mess right now, I love to imagine all of the vintage I would love to add to it. I don’t have the money to shop now so it is all day dreaming. But 1st Dibs always has such new amazing vintage every week that I drool over. Below are my favorites.

Bags and Belts

April 22, 2011

I tend to carry the same couple bags every time I go out. And let me tell you I am starting to get bored of them. I shouldn’t complain because I was lucky to inherit around 50 something bags from my grandmother. A few of them designer and the rest all vintage. So I am pretty lucky there. The downside is that the majority of them are tucked away in a box in Connecticut because i don’t have the room in our smaller apartment. I should swap some out but I have been lazy. As for belts Craig seems to have alot and wears them all the time. I on the other hand have maybe 3 and never ever wear them. I see bloggers on line with great belts that make their outfits so much cuter and just get green with envy. I either need to start collecting some vintage belts or just start wearing the ones I have. Anyhow, below are some favorites from 1stDibs that I would love to add to my closet.

Have a great weekend

Lauren
